The Zap It To Me Old Fashioned is my take on the Zapatero Old Fashioned cocktail. My version substitutes scotch for the mezcal, but keeps the creamy orgeat syrup and cranberry/orange garnish.
I don’t have any mezcal (honestly have never tried any) so I read up on the flavor profile, and got things like, “smoky,” “earthy,” “fruity/floral.” Noting that I had a bottle of Monkey Shoulder scotch in the cabinet, which has a little bit of all of that, I substituted the mezcal with the scotch. I also went for a 1:1 ratio of scotch and bourbon. We just happened to have homemade cranberry sauce left over from Christmas that my wife makes with whole cranberries, orange juice, orange peels, and sugar, so I used some of that instead of a standard garnish. Turned out pretty well, I think.
