I didn’t expect basil to work this well in an Old Fashioned, but here we are.
The basil gives it a fresh little edge without taking over the drink. It still tastes like an Old Fashioned first — the bourbon, the Demerara, the bitters are all still doing their job — but the basil changes the direction just enough to make it interesting.
Four Roses Small Batch works really well here because it’s balanced and doesn’t fight the herbal note. Peychaud’s bitters brighten everything up a bit, too.
The main thing is to go easy on the muddling. You’re not trying to make basil paste. Just wake it up enough to get the aroma into the drink.
This ended up landing somewhere between a classic Old Fashioned and something you’d want to drink outside when it’s stupid hot.
Honestly, I’ve made this more times than I expected to.
